Northrop Grumman is looking for an energetic Mechanical Engineer to work in Chantilly, VA. The candidate shall perform Mechanical engineering activities to include design, develop, build, test, and inspect mechanical devices and systems, reverse engineer and analyze electrical hardware and enclosures, tools, custom HW devices. A background as a machinist working in a shop environment with the ability to operate, CNC machines, Laser engravers, lathes, metal bending equipment is a plus. The successful candidate will have worked in a variety of different industries designing a wide range of products. To include prototyping, model making, custom mold design both hard and soft molds. Experience in thermal profiling and analysis, ability to attack a problem from a different perspective. Out of the box thinker, self-starter and motivated individual is needed.
The selected candidate will support composite design and manufacturing of engineering models and small production runs. Work directly as a team with other internal engineering disciplines and departments to address/resolve manufacturing issues and to ensure the on-time delivery of structures and assemblies to both internal and external customers.

Additional Roles and Responsibilities:

  • The qualified candidate provides support to multiple program's under supervision of a HW technical lead
  • Operate multiple machines in a complete machine shop environment, CNC, laser engravers, saws
  • The candidate researches, develops, designs, tests, documents, and recommends solutions to mechanical/composite components and assemblies as assigned
  • Maintains and improves designs of existing mechanical/composite components, equipment, and systems in support of production deliveries
  • Applies sound mechanical engineering judgment, first principles, concepts, and techniques
  • Plans, performs, and directs engineering activities to ensure design, production, and testing conform to mechanical design specifications and requirements
  • Will also be responsible for gathering, maintaining, formatting, compiling, and manipulating technical data, such as laboratory or material test results and engineering design changes
  • Conducts tests and records data to assist with engineering evaluation or analysis
  • Ability to evaluate, and integrate multiple complex electrical systems into fabricated enclosures and evaluate thermal profile, power, RF and provide feedback to Electrical engineers in the form of both written and verbal communication.
  • Plan, conceptualize, and create mechanical designs for new products
  • Develop testing processes, and perform testing and validation of new designs
  • Generate working prototypes for beta testing and customer demonstration
  • Perform engineering calculations to support design work
  • Create and review technical drawings, plans, and specifications using computer software
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary engineering teams, and work with vendors and contractors
  • Perform detailed documentation to track project development and design process
  • Ensure project timeline is met and project stays within budget

    Qualifications:

    Basic Qualifications:
    • Active DoD Secret clearance or higher is required
    • The ability to obtain and maintain special program access clearance
    • Bachelor's in a STEM discipline and 5 years of experience, or a Master's Degree and 3 years in a STEM Discipline
    • Firm grasp of engineering concepts, and experience designing mechanical systems and products
    • Excellent math skills: ability to apply advanced mathematical principles and statistics to solve problems
    • Experience using CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar
    • Exceptional technical and problem-solving skills and reasoning ability Preferred Qualifications:
      • Ability to communicate effectively and clearly
      • Out of the box thinker, ability to look at a problem and conceptualize solutions based on sound mechanical theory and disciplines
      • Experience with 3D modeling software
      • Proficient with Microsoft office suite
      • Practical understanding of composite structures
      • General understanding of machine shop, makers lab practices, policies, and procedures
