Description: The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), is actively seeking a Robotics Research Engineer. JHU APL is a national leader in scientific research and development and is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC. Introduction\: The Research & Exploratory Development Department (REDD) at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) Intelligent Systems Group (ISG) is a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers focused on developing the next generation of intelligent systems for the U.S. Government. The current emphasis of the ISG is on robotics, machine learning, autonomy, and applied neuroscience. The ISG is seeking a multidisciplinary robotics research engineer with experience in research and development of novel robotics technologies Job Summary\: The Intelligent Systems Group within the Research and Exploratory Development Department (REDD) is seeking a skilled and motivated Robotics Research Engineer who is interested in supporting a high energy, collaborative team that creates novel system concepts and rapid prototypes to address research questions and critical challenges for our sponsors. The candidate will contribute to multiple exciting projects helping to enhance the state of the art, such as advanced robotic end-effectors and manipulation systems, mobility in 2D and 3D space, robotic vision and perception, multi-sensor systems, control systems, and human-robot teaming. The candidate will work on and/or lead the research and development of robotics systems concepts, dynamic analysis, simulation and modeling, and defining test and evaluation criteria. Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task)\: 1. Contributing to and/or leading applied research in areas such as dexterous manipulation, advanced mobility, computer vision, AI applied to robotics, neural networks for control, and other related topic areas. (40%) 2. Contributing to and/or leading technical teams in the development and integration of proof of concept prototype components to address the most challenging technical design issues. (30%) 3. Writing scientific manuscripts and whitepapers summarizing results for conferences and peer review. (20%) 4. Working with sponsor organizations to communicate impacts of research. Qualification: Required Qualifications\: MS or PhD Degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent. Experience working on or leading multidisciplinary engineering teams. Experience with Autonomous vehicles, robot vision, dexterous manipulation, advanced mobility, AI applied to robotics, neural networks for control, and/or other related topic areas. Experience with common robot frameworks and modeling tools such as ROS, Gazebo, and/or OpenCV. Software engineering / programming experience. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to articulate complex technical issues effectively and appropriately for a wide range of audiences. Desired Qualifications\: PhD Degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent. Prior experience leading complex prototype development efforts that include mechanical, electrical and software design.
